Newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman To Star In Netflix Adaptation of 'The Prom'

Ryan Murphy's Netflix adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical, The Prom, is slated to begin shooting next month.

Up-and-coming actress Jo Ellen Pellman has landed the lead role of Emma, a high school student who is not allowed to take her girlfriend to senior prom. Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells, Ariana DeBose, are also set to star alongside Logan Riley Hassel, Sofia Deler, Nico Greetham, and Nathaniel J. Potvin.  Streep, Corden, Kidman and Rannells will portray Broadway stars who make a trip to support Emma in efforts to reclaim their position in the spotlight. 

Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin have written the Netflix screenplay, which is based on Jack Viertel's original concept. Beguelin also is doing the music and lyrics along with Matthew Sklar. Producing the movie are Murphy, Alexis Woodall, Bill Damaschke, and Dori Berinstein. Adam Anders is serving as executive music producer.

The film is expected to come out on Netflix in Fall 2020.
