Daphne Rubin-Vega Remembers “Rent” Creator Jonathan Larson

Two-time Tony nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega says she remembers Jonathan Larson as being “extremely encouraging.”

Rubin-Vega will star in “The Jonathan Larson Project” and told “In the Wings” that she always thought of Larson as a “magnificent geek.”  She said his compositions were different than how she perceived music, adding that it was “fascinating” how he was able to tell stories.

Rubin-Vega performed the role of Mimi in “Rent,” which premiered on Broadway on January 25, 1996, the same day that Larson died.  She said Larson encouraged her to “own” the songs that she sung.

“He listened to me and supported me,” Rubin-Vega said.

Performances of “The Jonathan Larson Project” will begin on Tuesday, October 9th.  Each performance will feature a different special guest, with Rubin-Vega appearing on Wednesday, October 10th
