Broadway stars Kaley Ann Voorhees and Nik Walker are inviting audiences to experience The Phantom of the Opera like never before in Masquerade, the Drama Desk Award-winning and Off-Broadway Alliance Award-winning immersive production now playing at Lee's Art Shop in Manhattan. The pair recently joined Christine Nagy on Inside Broadway to discuss the innovative show, its unique connection with audiences, and why no two performances are ever exactly alike.
For Voorhees, who made Broadway history as the youngest actress to play Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera, Masquerade offers a fresh way to revisit a beloved role. Walker, known for his work in Hamilton and Spamalot, described the production as both accessible and deeply emotional, whether audience members are longtime Phantom fans or experiencing the story for the first time.
Unlike a traditional Broadway performance, Masquerade places audiences directly inside the action, transforming them into guests at the Phantom's legendary ball. "You are now a part of it," Voorhees explained, noting that audience members move through the elaborate performance space alongside the actors.
The conversation also explored the enduring love triangle at the heart of Phantom. Voorhees shared her interpretation of Christine's complicated feelings for both Raoul and the Phantom, while Walker discussed portraying a Phantom whose heartbreak and vulnerability drive the story's emotional conclusion.
Masquerade is now playing at Lee's Art Shop on West 57th Street in Manhattan. Tickets are on sale through May 30, 2027, at MasqueradeNYC.com.
