After an incident last week at Hadestown where Lillias White called out an audience member who she believed was recording the show after mistakenly not realizing the device was in fact a closed captioning device, Patti LuPone's name has been used frequently on social media when discussing the matter. Many people have taken to all social platforms to discuss their personal outrage in White's outburst, while others have been quick to compare the backlash to what LuPone has done to call out audience members in the past and calling it a double standard.

Today LuPone responded to the social criticism with the following statement on Twitter: "Quite a week on Broadway, seeing my name bandied about. Gave up my Equity card; no longer part of that circus. Figure it out."

While Equity has not released a statement on the matter, LuPone did speak with Broadway World and said: "What the run of Company ended this past July, I knew I wouldn't be on stage for a very large time. And at that point I made the decision to resign from Equity".
