Disney+ is tackling yet another Broadway show following the successful release of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. Once On This Island is set to be adapted into a film for the streaming service!
Playwright Jocelyn Bioh and director Wanuri Kahiu are developing Once On This Island, a feature adaptation of the 1990 Broadway musical that is based on the Rosa Guy novel, My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl. The story is set in the French Antilles in the Caribbean Sea and tells of a peasant girl who falls in love with an aristocrat.
The show was last seen on Broadway in a 2017 revival where the production won the 2018 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
Further details such as casting, a production timeline and release date will be announced at a later date.
