Tim Rice Chats Writing Songs For Iconic Broadway Musicals

The legendary songwriter and EGOT winner, Tim Rice, who has written songs for musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, and The Lion King, called in to chat with 710WOR's Len Berman and Michael Riedel about how he's been occupying his time during the quarantine, songwriting, and more.

Riedel asked if he gets a gut feeling if it's a song he writes is a winner,

Rice says, "There are so many factors that go into making a song a hit that are beyond your control like who will sing it and what show it goes in, where it will be exposed, and so it's not good enough to just write a good song... But with 'The Circle Of Life,' when I first heard that and did the words on that, I just watched Elton John write it over a period of about an hour and a half and I just thought this is absolutely wonderful. I was convinced hearing the end of that, that his music created something phenomenal."

Later, Rice talks next steps in his career and if shares his opinion on when Broadway will reopen. Listen to the full interview in the player below.
