'Riverdale' Is Getting A Musical Spinoff!

'Riverdale' Katy Keene Musical Spinoff

Riverdale is becoming a musical!

Last night (January 23), the showrunner and Archie Comics chief creative officer Roberto AguirreSacasa announced via Twitter that he'd be expanding the fictional universe with a silver screen adapted spinoff series called Katy Keene.

"The #Riverdale universe expands! Thrilled to be bringing the adventures of Katy Keene and her New York pals to life! Extra-thrilled to be doing this with my pal Michael Grassi," AguirreSacasa shared along with a comic book cover of the persona dubbed America's Queen of Pin-Ups and Fashions.

Described as a musical dramedy by The Hollywood Reporter, the forthcoming project will follow the lives and loves of four twenty-somethings in New York City hoping to make it big on Broadway, on the runway, and in the recording studio. The show's name and its concept are based on the titular "fashion-legend-to-be" Katy Keene, created by Bill Woggon, who was introduced as a model, actress, and singer in the Archie Comics in 1945.

Per the report, Aguirre-Sacasa, Grassi, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater will executive produce the show, hailing from Warner Bros. TV.

However, fans shouldn't expect to find Katy Keene or her pals roaming through Riverdale anytime soon. As with Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the first side project of Riverdale which has already locked in a second season since its 2018 premiere, this new drama will stand on its own.
