New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award Winners Announced

The 84th annual voting meeting for the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards took place on May 6th and the big winners were revealed.

Taking home the award for Best Play of the 2018-2019 season is Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman. This play made its debut back in April of 2017 at the Royal Court Theatre and made its Broadway debut in October of 2018 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

Best musical went to Tootsie, which first debuted at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre in 2018 before the Broadway production opened in April of 2019.

The Award for Best American Play went to What the Constitution Means to Me by Heidi Schreck. This critically acclaimed play made its Broadway debut in March of 2019.

A special citation was voted to several theatre companies, including the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbein production of Fiddler on the Roof.

The award for best play carries a cash prize of $2,500; the award for best American play is a cash prize of $1,000. The prizes are made possible by a grant from the Lucille Lortel Foundation.

The New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards has been presented every year since 1936 to the best new play of the season, and is the oldest theater award next to the Pulitzer Prize for drama.
